Just a couple of decades ago in a small editing booth at a small college in central Kentucky two college friends bonded over a video about Africa. Andy was editing his first freelance project – a story about the Rwandan genocide – and I (Julie) couldn’t help myself from continuing to peek over his shoulder. Not too much later, we formed a business partnership and for the next few years worked with non-profits all over the world to create videos and other materials that raised money for a variety of causes.
While creating projects for other people, we often talked about bigger ideas of making videos that would tell meaningful stories and training others to share their own stories, but the time and the technology wasn’t right. Fast forward through another decade of life changes, marriages, children , moves around the country and career changes and one day old business partners realized that maybe the time and technology was finally right.
The ideas that had been kicked around for years are now coming together in Blue Dot. Our goal is to create and share videos, articles, photos and other content that connect people around the world. We hope to entertain, educate and inspire through our work as well as sharing great content from other people.
Co-founder and digital storyteller, Andy dreams up ideas, identifies stories, develop concepts and ensures high quality storytelling.
“I was only 9 the first time I traveled outside the United States. Like most 9 year olds my world was my home town which to me was only my family, school, the beach and the Dodgers. I cried when my parents told me we were moving to the Philippines. My world was shattered. I loved adventures, but this was too much. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this step would change my world in ways I could never imagine. My experience of growing up as what is known as a third culture kid would eventually open up doors to explore and understand the world in ways very few people experience.” Read the rest of Andy’s story.

“I was a bookworm as a child. I would voraciously read anything I could get my hands on. This included the dusty old encyclopedia set that had been left in our house by previous owners. It must have been from probably the 1960’s. It was bound in greenish-brown cloth with gold letters on the side depicting which alphabetized content each one included. Always a girl with a goal, I started with the letter A and planned to work my way down the whole shelf. As I was reading I came to the entry on Africa. I was mesmerized! In small black and white pictures a completely different world than one I had ever encountered was depicted.” Read the rest of Julie’s story.
